Planned Parenthood is withdrawing funding from Title X so it can continue to refer patients for an abortion; an attack in Afghanistan leaves some worried about more violence if the US withdraws.

  • Planned Parenthood has decided to reject Title X funding rather than abide by the Trump Administration's new abortion rule.[[[[Reuters / Brendan O'Brien]
  • Earlier this year, the Trump administration released a new rule prohibiting organizations receiving Title X funding – the only federal funding for family planning – from offering abortion referrals. Planned Parenthood, which serves about 40% of Title X beneficiaries, responded immediately and called it a "gag rule".[[[[BuzzFeed News / Dan Vergano]
  • Planned Parenthood had more than two choices: no longer refer to an abortion or reject about $ 60 million in federal funding. The organization chose the latter.[[[[Politico / Alice Miranda Ollstein]
  • This does not mean that the organization will lose all of its federal funding because it receives about $ 500 million of Medicaid per year (based on 2017-2018 records). But some services will probably have to be cut, say the experts.[[[[NYT / Pam Belluck]
  • Lack of funding could affect about 1.5 million people, many of whom benefit from non-abortion services such as birth control and STD screening. Some patients will experience delays in treatment, while others will lose access, according to Planned Parenthood.[[[[The Daily Beast / Emily Shugerman]
  • Planned Parenthood and other organizations do not see this as an attack on abortions. They said the new rule was also an attack on reproductive health care as it was also aimed at contraception, especially because the Obria anti-abortion group – which is against hormonal contraception – received a grant from $ 1.7 million.[[[[Vox / Anna North]
  • There is still a slight chance that the rule will be overturned because it is currently being reviewed by a federal court of appeal. For the moment, however, the administration is free to apply it.[[[[AP / David Crary and Ricardo Alonso-Zaldivar]

Marriage in Kabul kills at least 63 people

  • A suicide bombing at a wedding in Kabul, Afghanistan's capital city, killed at least 63 people and wounded about 182 others: the deadliest attack in the city so far this year.[[[[Vox / Zeeshan Aleem]
  • The attack, claimed by the Islamic State, left the bride and groom in shock by crying their family members and friends.[[[[Al Jazeera / Ali M Latifi]
  • The attack comes at a particularly delicate moment: the United States and the Taliban are finalizing a peace agreement and they hope that the United States will start withdrawing its troops as the Taliban begin. finally to negotiate with the Afghan government.[[[[AP / Rahim Faiez and Cara Anna]
  • The Taliban have denied any involvement in this attack and have publicly condemned it, but not everyone believes that their hands are perfectly clean. And even if the Taliban were innocent, they were responsible for several deadly attacks in Afghanistan, which did not stop during the US-Taliban peace talks.[[[[BBC]
  • Why did ISIS attack? Although the presence of ISIS is still quite weak, the group has stopped fighting the Taliban, the largest and oldest rival organization. If the Taliban reaches an agreement with the Afghan government and the United States, ISIS is eager to seize this opportunity to become the main opposition in the country and attract defectors from the Taliban, thus strengthening their influence.[[[[The goalkeeper / Jason Burke]
  • Some critics argue that the United States should not withdraw from Afghanistan, as this could spur the country to create terrorist organizations and wreak havoc on Afghan citizens.[[[[Vox / Zeeshan Aleem]
  • The Trump administration, however, remains optimistic about the peace deal: Special Representative Zalmay Khalilzad, a top US negotiator, tweeted that a peace deal would put the country in a better position to defeat ISIS. President Donald Trump is eager to reach an agreement before the 2020 presidential election. Discussions are continuing for the moment.[[[[CNN / Nick Paton Walsh]

"We will not be intimidated by the retention of information from our patients about abortion. Our patients deserve to make their own health care decisions, without having to ask Donald Trump or Mike Pence to make those decisions for them.
