LEICESTER, Vt. A police officer in the state of Vermont receives three doses of the opiate substitution drug, Narcan, after being exposed to an unknown substance.
It happened late Friday night and Saturday morning after a traffic stop on Whiting Road in Leicester.
While talking with the driver, Sgt. Brett Flansburg noticed that the 25-year-old female passenger, Taylor Woodward of Brandon, swallowed what was later identified as a bag of cocaine.
After a search of the car and Woodward, a small amount of heroin, an empty plastic bag and a syringe were found. Woodward was arrested for possession of heroin.
When Sergeant Flansburg returned to the Vermont State Police barracks, he collapsed on the parking lot. The soldiers found him unconscious and gave him two doses of Narcan, and the third dose was administered on the way to the UVM medical center. Sgt. Flansburg has finally been released and is recovering. Woodward was brought separately to UVM ™ and did not require any medical treatment.
The Vermont police lieutenant, Maurice Lamothe, attended the hospital and claims that he has never witnessed such an incident involving an officer.
"He was as safe as possible. But there is always a chance that, despite all that you do to be safe, there is always a chance that something like this can happen. So we were trying to find out exactly how that had happened and hope we can prevent such events from happening in the future, "said Lieutenant Lamothe.
Police are testing the substance to determine which Sgt. Flansburg was exposed to. A full investigation into the incident is underway.
