The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, which President Joe Biden signed on Thursday, waives federal tax on up to $ 10,200 in unemployment benefits for single adults who earned less than $ 150,000 a year in 2020 ( the limit is $ 20,400 for two workers in a married couple.)

Amounts over $ 10,200 are still taxable. States can also decide not to offer the tax relief.

The IRS also released tax filing instructions for those who had yet to file a return on Friday.

The 2020 tax filing deadline is one month away, April 15.
