Getting a PS5 and an Xbox Series X has been difficult at best. The demand has been extremely high, and it has been made worse by the fact that scalpers and robots keep buying all the stock.
But there is good news, with Walmart promising better ways to identify scalpers who use robots and prevent them from buying more next-gen consoles to resell them at outrageous prices.
This news comes from an article by chief information security officer Jerry Geisler on the Walmart website. In it, Geisler describes how Walmart is working to make sure people, not bots, get the “hottest goodies they want this season.” Including the PS5 and Xbox Series X, more of which will be “live soon”.
While it’s probably too late to have a console shipped before Christmas Day, assuming Walmart gets some new stock to sell, it might be possible to order online and pick it up at your local store. After all, you don’t have to wait for the console to be shipped and delivered if you pick it up yourself.
In-person pickup would also be a useful tool in the fight against scalpers. Walmart claims to have successfully thwarted 20 million bots in the first 30 minutes of its Nov. 25 resupply, but it’s clear more action is needed. The retailer may be using the technology to proactively prevent bots from buying stock, but whenever a new measure manages to thwart their efforts, scalpers embark on a workaround in an endless battle for decide who gets all the PS5.
By forcing people to pick up consoles in person, scalpers are much less likely to be able to purchase multiple consoles quite easily. This is especially true if Walmart stores are strict with the “one per customer” policy which is designed to prevent people from accumulating products in demand.
Scalpers could always visit multiple Walmart stores to pick up their ill-gotten purchases, but the harder it is for them to purchase multiple consoles, the less likely they are to bother.
Of course, the only real way to stop scalpers is to avoid buying them consoles. As frustrating as it can be that you can’t buy a PS5 or Xbox Series X from a legitimate retailer, the more people who resort to overpriced scalping consoles, the more likely those scalpers are to keep going. But if no one is buying, it is no longer economical to keep stocking the consoles the way they did.
