The incident began when two loss prevention officers at Walmart allegedly observed a man stealing items from the store and attempted to escort him to an office, according to a statement from the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.

Two deputies responded in an attempt to take the man into custody, the statement said. During a fight, the suspect drew a gun from his belt and allegedly started shooting, hitting both loss prevention officers and one of the two deputies, according to the sheriff’s office.

The second deputy fired back, hitting the suspect, authorities said.

“I don’t know what the injuries were, certainly not bad enough to stop him from running, jumping in a truck and going,” Loudoun County Sheriff Michael Chapman said.

The truck was parked behind the store with the keys inside, according to the sheriff’s office.

A vehicle chase ensued and the Fairfax County Police Department, following an alert for a stolen vehicle, apprehended the suspect, the sheriff’s office said.

The man was taken to hospital and charges are pending, authorities said.

Chapman said the suspect was a man in his twenties, according to CNN affiliate WJLA.

Not all of the victims’ injuries are life threatening, but the MP has been shot several times, Chapman said.
