The state of Alabama has partnered with Walmart to allow COVID-19 vaccinations in its stores, health officials said.
State health official Scott Harris said details on the partnership are forthcoming and a timeline for the program has not been set, but added it would be “soon.” The state is also close to a deal with a “big drugstore chain” to provide vaccines, Harris said.
Harris said the state will use part of its allocation to go directly to chain pharmacies to facilitate faster delivery to the public. Alabama has seen a slow rollout of its immunization program and has currently donated around 45% of its allocated doses.
ADHD employees have been reoriented from their current roles to speed up the vaccination process. Healthcare workers, residents and employees of long-term care facilities, law enforcement officers and firefighters, as well as people over the age of 75, are currently eligible to receive the vaccine.
Walmart, the country’s largest retailer, announced in December that it was preparing to administer the COVID vaccine at 5,000 Walmart and Sam’s Club pharmacies across the country. The chain installed freezers and dry ice in all locations to allow vaccine storage.
Walmart stores in New Mexico have already started helping that state with vaccinations.
