It seems like everything is going on in the cloud these days, so why should we let filmmaking? Today, Walt Disney Studios has announced a five-year partnership with Microsoft around an innovation lab to find ways to transfer content production to the Azure cloud.
The project involves the Walt Disney StudioLAB, an innovative workspace where Disney staff can experiment with different types of workflows moved to the cloud. The film production software company, Avid, is also involved.
The hope is that by working together, all three parties can offer creative workflows based on the cloud, able to accelerate the innovation cycle of the prestigious filmmaker. All big companies are looking for ways to innovate, no matter what their core business, and Disney is no different.
Since movie creation requires more and more computing resources, the cloud is the ideal model: it allows them to expand and shrink resources according to their needs, whether it's rendering scenes or the addition of special effects. According to Jamie Voris, CTO Disney, this could make these processes more efficient, which would reduce costs and production times.
"Through this innovation partnership with Microsoft, We're able to streamline many of our processes so that our talented filmmakers can focus on what they do best, "said Voris in a statement," that's the same kind of value proposition in the cloud as a lot of big companies are looking for, they want to speed up time to market, while letting technology handle some of the most mundane tasks.
The partnership builds on an already existing partnership between Microsoft and Avid. The two companies were collaborating to create cloud-based workflows for the film industry using Avid software solutions on Azure. Disney will add unique requirements to the mix and, over the five-year partnership, hopes to streamline some of its workflows in a more modern cloud environment.
