Disneyland Resort is preparing for the upcoming opening of the new Marvel theme park at Disney California Adventure. Even though we have recently seen many identical attractions in theme parks on both coasts, a landscape inspired by Marvel superheroes is something we will not see at Walt Disney World in Florida. Here's why.
Universal holds the rights to use Marvel in its theme parks in Florida
Even though Disney acquired Marvel in 2009, that does not mean that the company has had the leisure to use everything related to Marvel in its theme parks. Universal still had rights on Marvel, which is why we are seeing a fairly large Marvel presence at Universal Orlando Resort in Florida. Interestingly, it seems that Disney is allowed to use any Marvel character in its Walt Disney World theme parks until these characters are represented at Universal Orlando. That's why, at Disney California Adventure, the Marvel theme can not be called Marvel Land. Instead, we'll know it at Super Hero HQ. There will always be Marvel characters like Spider-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, etc., but we will not see anything with the word "Marvel" used in the marketing of the new park extension. This also explains why the Marvel-themed event after dark has not been labeled "Marvel" at all. It's a bit confusing, but that's where Disney and Universal come together to come to an agreement that does not seem to have changed so soon.
But here's why it's a good thing
Of course, it would be nice to have a Marvel theme park at Walt Disney World. We all know there is enough room for such expansion. And with Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge being identical theme grounds to Disneyland California and Disney's Hollywood Studios in Florida, it's no surprise that Disney fans may want to take advantage of the biggest many of the same attractions as possible at Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort.
However, the diversity of theme park attractions is part of what makes them so enjoyable. Of course, a superhero park is being developed in several Disney parks around the world, but we will never experience the same attractions, and all Disney parks will not feature Marvel characters. We do not know what Disney's plans are for the future, but we know that having unique attractions in every Disney park around the world makes fans want to visit every park. If each amusement park had the same attractions, what would it be like to visit them all?
Walt Disney World will not soon have a Marvel theme park (we will have to wait for it to open on the West Coast to live it). But that just means there will be a greater variety of attractions on both US shores. We do not know about you, but we think that the more attractions are epic, the better.
