WandaVision spoilers for episode 4 follow.
We knew that WandaVision would play a role in setting up Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but he also has a say in another future MCU movie.
The fourth episode of the brilliant Marvel series picks up on the events of the previous episode which saw Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) apparently kicked out of Westview after mentioning Ultron.
But the opening of the episode would have come as a surprise to all Marvel fans and it also led to the episode confirming the fate of a Captain Marvel character, probably excluding a return for them in Captain Marvel 2.
Spoilers are ahead, so look away now if you haven’t seen WandaVision episode four again.

The episode’s dramatic start revealed that Monica was a victim of Thanos’ Snap and showed her returning to the world due to the events of Avengers: Endgame. She gathered in a hospital room where she was waiting by someone’s bed when she was dusted.
It turned out that the person she was keeping company with when the Snap happened was her mother Maria Rambeau, playing in Captain Marvel by Lashana Lynch. However, Maria did not return at the same time as Monica.
Tragically, Monica discovers that even though five years ago, Maria underwent successful cancer surgery, she returned after Monica went missing and is told her mother passed away three years ago.
RIP Maria ‘Photon’ Rambeau.
We at least found out that after the events of Captain Marvel, Maria founded SWORD – the Sensitive Weapons Observation and Response Division – which will be an important part of Phase 4 in the future.
However, his offscreen death potentially rules out any Captain Marvel 2 appearance unless it occurs before WandaVision in the MCU timeline.
Parris has been confirmed to reprise her role as Monica Rambeau in the sequel, so if Maria is to be involved, the sequel could take place before Avengers: Infinity War in the timeline. Perhaps this could focus on the origins of SWORD and Monica’s early days as an agent working with her mother as the director of SWORD.
This would seem to be a strange setting for Captain Marvel 2 because that wouldn’t allow much for Monica’s character development or Captain Marvel herself. It seems more likely to happen after the events of WandaVision, which would rule out a return for Maria beyond the flashbacks.
For now, we’ll just have to watch this space, while we try to figure out what’s going on in Westview.
