WandaVision, in its first episodes, is set in a whimsical sitcom world where things clearly aren’t as perfect as they seem. Delicious nods to classic shows like The Dick Van Dyke Show and Nice to meet you seem to camouflage a more sinister reality – remember that weird bloodstain moment with Dottie in episode 2? And this week, it seems that the titular heroine of the Disney + series is finally catching up with this mysterious existence.
At the end of Episode 3, Wanda’s very accelerated pregnancy results in a nice surprise for her and Vision: twins, named Tommy and Billy. The experience of delivering not one but of them babies awakens Wanda’s memory of her own twin, Pietro, who was played in the movies by Aaron Taylor-Johnson and who died protecting Hawkeye in Avengers: Age of Ultron. This is the first time in the series that Wanda seems able to remember whatever about her past, and according to Elizabeth Olsen, this is just the beginning.
“The experience of real birth – like a real birth experience, because they are real breathing creatures that she gave birth to.” [Laughs] – I think that’s what triggered that memory that got crushed, ”Olsen told TVLine. “She’s really starting to reconnect with those memories that aren’t on the surface. And we’ll continue to watch her discover more of those kinds of moments.
But does Wanda want to remember? All signs indicate no. Before the sudden childbirth, Vision pointed to a pattern of trouble in their seemingly idyllic world, up to and including their neighbor Herb unwittingly sawing through a brick wall with a hedge trimmer. But just as Vision started to gauge all of that worry, a “jump” in the video rewound us a bit, glossing over his presentation.
Likewise, when Geraldine, at the end of the episode, noted that Wanda’s twin, Pietro, had been killed by Ultron, Wanda seemed embarrassed by the injection of harsh reality. A single tear ran down her cheek, before grilling Geraldine on her true identity. Before…
Well we haven’t seen exactly what came next. But just as Vision was heading back inside to find Geraldine suddenly gone and Wanda indifferent / even satisfied, we saw Teyonah Parris’ character fall through some sort of digital membrane that surrounds Westview and land in a grassy field adjacent to a military camp (SWORD?) erected just outside the suburban enclave – hinting that it is, in fact (SPOILER ALERT, although the MCU announced it in July 2019) an adult Monica Rambeau, as in the daughter of Captain MarvelAir Force pilot Maria Rambeau.
