Marvel Studios Has Made Its Way To The Small Screen, And It’s Presented To You In A Glorious Way WandaVision.
Disney + released the first two episodes of the inaugural Marvel Studios TV series on Friday, which brings Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany back in their respective MCU roles – but this time around, instead of battling Ultron and Thanos, Wanda and Vision are living a life straight out of Nick to Nite’s 1990s lineup, through their own sitcom.
Before you tell us what you thought WandaVisionThe debut of, which officially kicks off Phase 4 of the MCU, let’s recap what happened in those two installments:
EPISODE 1 | The first of the series, which largely emulates The Dick Van Dyke Show, finds Wanda and Vision sharing a lovely little life in Westview: She can fix a broken plate with a wave of her hand! He could look like a classic sitcom husband, but all he does is disguise his robot face! How new is all of this! But even if they try to hide their true powers from their neighbors and blend in with the rest of the suburbs, there is a direct line here that something is wrong. For example, when Wanda and Vision notice a little heart drawn on their wall calendar for that day, neither of them remembers what it means … even though Vision is physically unable to forget any information.
At work, Vision also can’t remember what his business really is. Is; it kind of involves computer forms, and whatever work you do, Vision is incredibly productive – but still, it’s weird, right? Meanwhile, at home, Wanda receives a visit from her neighbor Agnes (the inimitable Kathryn Hahn) and lies that it’s her and Vision’s birthday. Still, she can’t answer when Agnes asks how many years they’ve been together, and Wanda realizes that she isn’t even wearing a wedding ring.
Vision finally realizes, with some degree of horror, that the heart of the calendar symbolizes a dinner they are having that evening with his boss, Mr. Deer, and his wife. But when he calls Wanda to inform him of the event, she interrupts him, saying that she has everything under control with the help of Agnes; she’s talking about their birthday dinner, sure, but he’s talking about hosting the Harts. Ah, those two!
(The show in the show takes a hiatus here is when we see an old-fashioned commercial for the Toast Mate 2000 toaster… by Stark Industries! “Forget the past – it’s your future!” ‘ad. Hmmm …)
Unsurprisingly, dinner with the Harts is pretty disastrous at first, not least because Wanda accidentally greets Mr. Hart, and do not Vision, while wearing a semi-scandalous outfit (for the 50s). Then there are Wanda’s ill-fated attempts to whip up a multi-course meal in minutes – the rules of her powers seem a bit hazy here – and Vision’s out of nowhere performances of “Yakety Yak” and “Old MacDonald” All in an effort to never let the Harts witness Wanda’s magic. Finally, Wanda is improvising breakfast for dinner just as Mrs. Hart starts to feel dizzy… although that’s when things get weirder.
As they eat, Mr. Hart asks Wanda and Vision questions, like when they got married and why they moved to this particular town. Wanda and Vision look at each other, puzzled and unable to find answers. Mr. Hart becomes agitated by their confusion and suddenly he begins to choke on a piece of food. There is a disturbing minute as Mr. Hart falls from his chair and lies down on the floor coughing: Mrs. Hart simply says, “Stop!” over and over – laughing at first, but then a little desperate, with tears in their eyes – and Wanda and Vision look at each other anxiously, seeming to know they could use their powers here, but don’t know if they should.
“Vision, help him,” Wanda finally says solemnly, and Vision does. Without Ms. Hart seeing it happening, Vision’s hand materialized through her boss’s throat, easily pulling the bite lodged there and setting it on the table. Mr Hart is recovering quickly – as is Vision’s future in his job, given that Mr Hart now wants to promote him for saving his life. On that note, however, it’s time for the Harts to skedaddle, and after that, Wanda and Vision make some quick decisions about their unusual relationship. For one thing, today will be their new anniversary (to survive dinner with the boss, at least); their song will be “Yakety Yak”; and Wanda whips up alliances.
“And they’ve lived happily ever after,” Vision says before kissing Wanda, and they smile straight into the camera as the WandaVision the credits roll … but as they do, we pull out to find that WandaVision playing on a monitor somewhere in the present, surrounded by other eerie-looking screens, buttons, and gadgets. Someone writes something down in a notebook with the SWORD logo on it, then grabs a stylish remote control.
EPISODE 2 | We are now in the 60s at the Nice to meet you, and the open cold of this WandaVision The episode is simply delicious: Wanda and Vision are both afraid of a noise coming from outside – Vision a little more than Wanda, that is – only to find out that it is a tree that slams against their window. “Are you using your night vision, Vision?” Wanda wonders as her husband checks the source of the noise, giving us all a hint of nostalgia for this serious brand of television.
The next day, Vision practices the magician act he’ll play at the neighborhood talent show fundraiser – and in an effort to blend in with the rest of Westview, Vision will do. false magic, not one that reveals its real powers. But not long after Vision heads to a Neighborhood Watch program meeting, Wanda hears a noise outside, like something with an engine suddenly crashes. She finds a toy helicopter in their bushes outside, but it’s oddly in color, while the rest of the show is black and white. The helicopter – which features the same SWORD logo we saw in Episode 1 – appears to be shaking Wanda, and she glances at the tree outside her room as if it might be. to be that. was not the source of the noise last night, after all. But she is forced to put everything aside when Agnes appears, eager to attend a meeting of the talent show planning committee.
At the reunion, as Wanda unsuccessfully tries to impress the local queen bee and Stepford’s alleged wife Dottie, she also meets who we know is the adult version of Monica Rambeau (last seen as a young girl Captain Marvel) – but when Wanda introduces herself, Monica doesn’t seem to remember her own name, instead calling herself Geraldine. Meanwhile, during the Neighborhood Watch meeting at the local library, Vision establishes a good rapport with the group … only to accept a piece of Big Red chewing gum from one of the men and then swallow it. quickly when he gets his back stroked, messing up his internal gears.
Back at the planning committee lunch, Wanda tries to smile and put up with being a part of Dottie’s cleanup crew, but Dottie stays chilly towards her. She says she’s heard rumors about Wanda and Vision, to which Wanda replies, “I don’t know what you were told, but I assure you I don’t want to hurt anyone. “I don’t believe you,” Dottie replies – and just then the radio playing at lunch starts to have some interference, and it’s someone saying Wanda’s name on the static.
“Wanda, can you read me?” the voice asks, sounding a bit like Jimmy Woo of Randall Park, a former SHIELD agent previously seen in Ant-Man and the Wasp. “Who’s doing this to you, Wanda?” An alarmed Dottie asks Wanda, “Who is this?” Which are you? And as the voice continues to call for Wanda, the radio suddenly sparks and shatters, simultaneously shattering the glass of iced tea in Dottie’s hand; the blood from her cut, oddly enough, appears bright red in this otherwise black and white episode. And just like that, it’s like nothing has happened. Dottie just makes a joke about getting a blood stain on white cloth, then walks away.
(Another ad is playing here, this time announcing a Strücker watch. “Strücker. It will take time for you,” the ad states. Again, I say: Hmmm …)
We resume at the neighborhood talent show, where Wanda is panicking that Vision has yet to show up for their performance. Just in time, Vision appears – but this gum in his system has done some damage, and now Vision is acting like he’s drunk more than a few beers. He stumbles and stumbles all over the place as they take the stage for their magic show, and worst of all, he’s now so uninhibited that he performs magic tricks with his real powers.
Wanda, with a flick of her fingers not unlike Samantha Stevens’ nose twitch, manages to conceal Vision’s powers and make her show sound like wacky, burlesque magic tricks. The audience is impressed enough, and even though Wanda and Vision try to sneak out of the talent show after their performance – and after Wanda removes the gum from Vision’s system, quickly bringing it back to normal – they are called out. on stage to receive the top Comedy Performance of the Year award, which is also what Paul Bettany is expected to receive after his turn as Erased Vision.
At home, the relieved couple rejoice over their unexpected victory – and when Wanda heads to the kitchen to grab some popcorn, she realizes she’s suddenly pregnant. (And a few months later, judging by her bump!) There are a lot of questions Wanda should ask about this pregnancy, but she just smiles and asks, “Is this really happening?” But as she and Vision kiss, there is yet another baffling noise outside. They head to the courtyard to investigate, and they discover someone peeking out of the gaze that is slightly down the road. He’s wearing a beekeeper outfit with the SWORD logo on the back and bees swarm around him. And although we don’t have a clear look on her face, the beekeeper turns to look directly at Wanda and Vision, prompting a scared Wanda to say, “No.”
Suddenly the scene rewinds. Wanda and Vision are now back in their house like a few moments ago, just realizing again that Wanda is pregnant. They smile and kiss again – and this time there is no noise outside. Instead, Wanda pulls away from Vision and is stunned to find that he now appears in vivid colors – and besides, with just one swiping motion, their entire black and white existence turns into color. The couple marvels – eh – at their new surroundings, and they kiss as the credits roll. But at the end of the episode, we hear that voice once more: “Wanda? Who’s doing this to you, Wanda?
