You may not need to see an optometrist just to get a basic prescription update for your glasses. Warby Parker presents Virtual Vision Test, a redesign of its Prescription Check app that allows you to renew your prescription for glasses or contact lenses using only an iPhone and your existing glasses. Support your phone, stand 10 feet away, and you can perform a familiar “can you read this” test that will determine if your glasses or contacts need updating.
The update is not automatic. An eye doctor will review the results and give you a verdict within two days. If you can see well enough, you will only have to pay $ 15 to renew your prescription. If you are having difficulty or are simply not eligible to use the app (see below), Warby Parker will recommend that you take a Comprehensive Eye Exam.
The company is clear that this is not a substitute for your ophthalmologist and that you will need to meet certain criteria beyond what we just mentioned. You must be between 18 and 65 years old, have no eye health problem and have a single vision distance prescription.
The approach leverages iOS’s Vision Framework to measure your distance from your iPhone and make sure you’re far enough away from a proper test. We asked Warby Parker about an Android version, although it might take a while given that it would take a rough equivalent of the Vision Framework.
The motivations behind Virtual Vision Test are clear: In addition to the renewal fee, it could lead to more people buying Warby Parker eyewear and visiting the company’s stores. Either way, it could be very useful if you can’t take the time to update your prescription or if you’re still nervous about a visit when COVID-19 remains a concern.
