Warframe’s The New War expansion introduces new playable characters – cross-play also announced

At TennoCon 2021, developer Digital Extremes finally revealed more information about Warframe’s The New War story expansion, which was first teased in 2019. Coming later this year, The New War is a new cinematic story quest focused on the Tenno and other factions entering a new phase of conflict that will span the star system. During the TennoCon 2021 live stream, we saw over 30 minutes of extended gameplay for The New War expansion. This cinematic questline sees the Tenno – the Space Ninja faction – working with allies from other factions to take on the man-made life forms known as Sentients, which invaded Cestus on Eidolon’s planes. . According to the developers, The New War will be the longest story quest the game has ever seen. In the same vein as previous cinematic quests like The Sacrifice and The Second Dream, The New War will take you on different missions with pre-set encounters and bespoke story rhythms that will reveal new lore about key Warframe characters and factions. . This new expansion will also set the stage for the following expansions and live events.

The TennoCon 2021 extended gameplay reveal has started off on a high, showing the scale of the Sentient invasion. In a surprise twist, we then moved on to gameplay for characters other than our familiar Tenno. While your adventures through Warframe have focused on the Tenno, The New War will mark the first time players have taken an active role as supporting characters for story missions. In the gameplay we saw during the stream, The New War will feature missions that allow you to control the Conclave’s Teshin, sword-wielding faction, Kahl-175 of the Grineer, and Engineer Corpus Veso. These stand-alone missions will focus on each character’s particular load and skills, which sets them apart from the roster of frames you’ve grown accustomed to over the years. However, The New War will still focus on the Tenno and their actions during this quest.

As a longtime Warframe player, it’s interesting to see the game drift away from our core frameworks list and focus on other supporting characters. While two of the original characters we’ll be playing in The New War closely follow the standard Grineer and Corpus soldier archetypes we’ve seen often, Teshin appears to be the most unique to play. It doesn’t have the maneuverability of the usual frames, but it makes up for it with other gadgets like a grappling hook, which makes the game fun. I’m interested to see how the story path for each of the new characters will change and if they will meet at some point during The New War expansion.

Another big reveal from TennoCon 2021 is that not only is cross-play and cross-save going on, but a mobile version of Warframe is also on the way. During a live match, the developers played a Warframe game set on the open world map on Eidolon’s blueprints with PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and a mobile device. According to the developers, this is a “dream” feature for the game they have wanted for some time. Cross-save, cross-read, and mobile are still in active development, and the developers have said more information and details will come later this year.
