The rally at Macalester College in St. Paul was the first of two stops that Warren did when she launched her campaign in the state. On Tuesday morning, Warren held a Roundtable on Criminal Justice Reform in Minneapolis.

This was supposed to be a question-and-answer session, but Warren said "it's a bit tricky with 12,000 people," according to a recording of his speech shared by WCCO, a subsidiary of the CBS channel.

Warren's political director Rebecca Pearcey also tweeted that 12,000 people came to Monday's protest, including a photo of the packed field.

Local reports did not put the number at 12,000, but reported that thousands of people were present. Among them was a look-alike from Warren who took a picture with the hope of the White House, reported StarTribune.

Fans began to occupy the university field more than two hours before Warren's arrival, reports the Minnesota Public Radio News.

Sarah Shapley-Melting, a resident of St. Paul, told WCCO that she had quit her job early "because I really want to be able to see her".

The Hill contacted the Warren Campaign and Macalester College to obtain an estimate of the size of the crowd.

Warren climbed to the top of the overcrowded primary pack. An average of RealClearPolitics polls put it in second place at 15.8%, practically neck and neck with Sen.
