Warriors ‘Draymond Green stunned by referees’ explanation after their ejection

The three-man referee team for the Warriors’ game against the New York Knicks on Thursday made a glaring “error” just before halftime.

With one minute to go into the first period, referee John Butler sent off Draymond Green, who was yelling at teammate James Wiseman after a rolling attack.

Butler thought Green was yelling at him, although the Warriors forward had no reason to yell at the ref at this point.

After the Warriors lost 119-104 to the Knicks at Chase Center, NBC Sports Bay Area’s Monte Poole served as the pool reporter and spoke to team chief Ben Taylor. Here’s how the short conversation went:

Poole: “Why did Draymond Green assess a second technical foul with 1:04 left in the second quarter?”
Taylor: “Green received his second technical foul for profanity deemed directed at the official.”

Poole: “It looks like Warriors coach Steve Kerr and several players were trying to tell you that Draymond was speaking to his teammates James Wiseman. Is that the explanation you heard?
Taylor: “Yes it was.”

Poole: “Did you consider canceling the second technical foul after hearing their explanation?”
Taylor: “No we do not have.”

Naturally, Green was stunned by Taylor’s responses.

Marc J. Spears of The Undefeated spoke with Green, who offered a clear three-word answer.

“Wow. Bold. Privilege,” Green said to Spears.

The Warriors are clearly not happy with Green’s expulsion, and rightly so. They argued their case to the referees in vain, and in the end, they were right. Green was not directing his anger on Butler but rather on Wiseman.

We should know on Friday whether the NBA will overturn the second technical foul and if there is any other fallout from the situation.
