Warriors’ internally discussed ‘trade for Blazers’ Damian Lillard, report says

The Golden State Warriors are seen as a destination for Damian Lillard if the Portland Trail Blazers consider trading the superstar this offseason.

“They would make a call and have discussed the idea internally already, as I’m sure most candidates have, given the smoke rising from Portland,” The Athletic’s Anthony Slater noted on the Warriors. Monday.

Slater’s report doesn’t directly say that the Warriors have actually spoken to the Portland front office, but furthermore, they’re discussing a trade and waiting to see if Lillard demands one.

Lillard, 30, is under contract with the Trail Blazers until 2025, with a player option in his senior year. A report from Yahoo Sports in June said the Lillard could exit Portland in a trade because he is upset by fans’ reaction to the hiring of new head coach Chauncey Billups, and is not convinced that Neil Olshey, president of basketball operations, can build a rival team around him.

In Slater’s note, he writes that the Warriors may come up with a commercial package that includes James Wiseman, as well as the No.7 and No.14 picks in the upcoming NBA Draft. The Warriors would also include Andrew Wiggins and future premieres in a potential deal. All of the pieces would give the Blazers a solid plan if they were to prepare for life after Lillard.

The question with this trade remains whether this is actually suitable for Golden State. Lillard alongside Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson would give the Warriors arguably the most scoring backcourt ever, but leave them with a questionable defensive backcourt and a hole in the frontcourt minus Wiseman.
