Training camp is around the corner for the Golden State Warriors. And while they probably make another move or two before everyone shows up at the Chase Center, we’re starting to see the list take shape.
There aren’t many notable names left in the market anymore, so we’ve got a good idea of what things are going to look like for Golden State. So let’s take an inventory and see where they are.
While NBA teams can only accommodate 13 players for any given game, they are allowed 17 players on the roster: 15 on regular contracts and two more on two-way contracts. The Warriors currently have 18 players carrying some form of contract, although that will surely increase in the coming weeks.
Here is where they stand.
Fully guaranteed contracts (12)
Kent bazemore
Steph Curry
Draymond Green
Kevon Looney
Kelly Oubre Jr.
Eric Paschall
Jordan poole
Alen smailagić
Klay thompson
Brad Wanamaker
Andrew Wiggins
James wiseman
These are the guaranteed contracts, but that doesn’t mean the players are guaranteed to be on the roster. Smailagić makes a sum small enough that he can be forfeited if the Warriors target someone, but that seems highly unlikely. Looney could be traded if the right trade is available, but that would be very surprising.
Finally, it should be noted that Thompson holds one of 15 spots on the roster, even though and when the Warriors are awarded the disabled player exception.
Partially guaranteed contracts (2)
Marquese Chriss
Damion lee
Chriss and Lee may only have partially guaranteed contracts, but they feel fully assured that they are on the list. If the Warriors had landed a name like Marc Gasol, they might have given up or traded Chriss. But there aren’t any major centers left in the market, so that’s unlikely. And Golden State needs the shooting and defense Lee offers off the bench.
Chriss’s contract is guaranteed $ 800,000 and Lee’s $ 600,000. If the right player were to become available at some point, Warriors could always forgo one of these two.
Unsecured contracts (3)
Mychal Mulder
Dwayne Sutton
Juan Toscano-Anderson
The Warriors signed multi-year contracts with Mulder and Toscano-Anderson a season ago, but the two were not guaranteed. Sutton, who is a rookie, was signed after going undrafted.
Any of these three could make the list on opening night and stay there for a while or be canceled at any time. Or one of them could be converted into a two way contract.
Bidirectional contracts (1)
Nico mannion
The Warriors haven’t officially announced Mannion’s status, but Athletic’s Anthony Slater reports the No.48 pick will be signed on a two-way contract. For this season, two-way contracts are allowed to be active for 50 games and have an unlimited number of training and travel days.
What’s left?
The Warriors therefore have 18 players for 17 places. If they want to race with the crew they have, they’ll still have to remove one from the Mulder / Sutton / Toscano-Anderson crew and sign another for a two-way contract.
If you count only fully and partially guaranteed contracts, Warriors have a spot available for Opening Night. They can fulfill it with a minimum contract, which remains of the taxpayer’s mid-level exception or the disabled player’s exception.
