We’ve known for some time now that the Golden State Warriors were unlikely to come out of the offseason with Ben Simmons on their roster, no matter how many rumors spread, and no matter how much the triple All-Star and how much. Defensive Defensive Player of the Year finalists’ campaigns will end in California.
He’s a tired subject, but he was due to return this week, after ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski announced Simmons would not be showing up to the next Philadelphia 76ers training camp and informed the organization that he would not be returning. not in action until it is traded. He spent his last day playing basketball for the Sixers.
But while that will spark a more fleeting talk around the Warriors – and all of the other Simmons-related teams – it sure looks like there is nothing to do here for Dub Nation. And it was highlighted on Tuesday when Warriors owner Joe Lacob did something rare and commented on the situation.
Speaking to Rusty Simmons of the San Francisco Chronicle, Lacob questioned publicly if Simmons would be working on the Warriors and appeared to criticize Simmons’ ability to stay on the pitch through tough times. This is one area of Simmons’ game that was criticized during a terrible performance in the final games of the Eastern Conference semifinals, where the Sixers were upset by the Atlanta Hawks.
“In some ways, that doesn’t quite match what we do. He earns a lot of money. And, can he finish the games? I don’t know, ”Lacob told The Chronicle. “He’s very talented. The problem is: we have Draymond. He and Draymond are very similar in that neither of them really shoot and they do a lot of the game. That’s a problem. The salary structure is another.
It’s a little strange for Lacob to say this publicly. There really doesn’t seem to be any benefit except to potentially diminish Simmons’ value. And it’s hard to read this quote and I think Lacob would like the value of Simmons to be depressed.
Lacob was quite limited in what he could say, as anything that was laudatory could be considered forgery and come with a heavy fine. Yet a quote about being happy with the team’s current situation, or even just stopping with her quote from earlier in the article – “We’re still looking at everything to see if we can improve our team.” – would seem to suffice.
But it’s also in line with Lacob’s recent habits. In the past year or so, he’s been voicing his opinions on basketball a lot more. Presumably front office basketball minds are still the ones making the decisions, but it’s interesting to see Lacob giving his opinion publicly more often.
