Police intervened Thursday night at the scene of gunfire on a Washington, DC street known for its restaurants and bars. At least two adult men sustained non-life threatening gunshot wounds, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. Officials say the two are “conscious and breathing” and are being treated in hospitals in the area.
The Metropolitan Police Department confirmed in a tweet that a shooting took place at around 8:20 a.m. local time at the intersection of 14th and Riggs Street.
Police are looking for a man leaving the scene in what they described as an old black sedan, captured on video and posted online. They ask the public for any additional information about this suspect and possibly others.
Other videos showed the blocked area and first responders at the scene. Police said the shooting was still under investigation. Authorities did not immediately disclose the identity of the suspected gunman or those who were shot.
Police Chief Robert Contee of the Washington, DC Metropolitan Police Department was at the scene and held a late evening press conference. He said “more than one shot” was fired and at least one of the wounded was said to have been targeted. The other person was apparently an innocent bystander, Contee said, noting that this was preliminary information.
Contee said police responded to the shooting near restaurants “within five seconds” because they were investigating an earlier shooting where two guns were found in two separate locations.
A restaurant customer reacted to the shooting and told CBS affiliate WUSA-TV that “these random events will happen.”
“It doesn’t matter if you are in a dangerous or pleasant area. These random events will happen. Anytime. Anywhere. So stay on your toes and communicate often,” said Mike Wendle.
Thursday’s shooting comes days after the one that took place outside the stadium where the Washington Nationals played against the San Diego Padres on Saturday night. This incident led to a scene of panic, with participants taking cover and teams retreating to their lodges. Police said three people were shot dead in the incident.
