Washington deletes tweet mocking President Trump

Even at 4-7 and their starting third quarterback, it’s a fun time to be the Washington football team.

He beat rival Dallas at Thanksgiving, demolishing the Cowboys 41-16. He even used a fumblerooski to do it. It all adds up to an unlikely lead in the comically putrid NFC East.

So, the day after Thursday’s victory, the head of Washington’s Twitter account decided to have a little fun with the team’s division chief. Attaching a screenshot of the NFC East rankings, Washington tweeted “STOP THE COUNT!”

A few hours later, the tweet was deleted.

Trump’s joke from Washington deleted

It doesn’t take a keen political observer to figure out exactly what Washington was referring to with its tweet, or a seasoned NFL observer to guess why the team pulled it.

Earlier this month, “Stop counting!” became a popular refrain for President Donald Trump and his supporters as several swing states attempted to count legally cast votes. While Trump held the lead in the official ballot tally for Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Georgia at the end of traditional election night, those tally included a disproportionate number of votes from Democratic-majority cities as well as postal votes which also skewed the left.

Because the count of the remaining ballots – which, again, were legally cast – slowly reduced Trump’s chances of re-election, Trump began to demand that the ballots stop being counted. Much like a soccer team would want to stop playing games if they suddenly had an unlikely division lead.

Trump’s team has since filed several lawsuits and court challenges to stop the tally or reject legal votes, almost all of which have gone to no trial. Joe Biden remains the president-elect, and Trump has said he will effectively step down if the electoral college votes him on December 14.

Given that the NFL tries to avoid almost any unnecessary foray into politics, you can imagine Washington’s top executives didn’t appreciate a tweet mocking an incumbent president.
