The Washington football team has ruled out at least one potential option for the team’s new nickname.
Washington President Jason Wright said in a statement posted on the team’s website that the new name will not have anything to do with Native Americans. Wright said the new name should attract more people to support the team and the new name shouldn’t be offensive to anyone.

“With that in mind, we’ve made it a priority to execute an inclusive process to listen to all voices. We have placed particular emphasis on engaging, listening and learning from Native American leaders and individuals across the country, ”said Wright. “This process exposed us to very deeply held personal feelings about our previous images and associations – and not just the simple and easy to categorize ‘who’s for or against’ our old name poll, but the research revealing the effect of Native American team names on Native American and Alaskan youth.
In summary, this engagement has shown us a consensus that moving forward without any connection to Native American imagery is the right path. Wright added that the team does not view the term “Warriors” as a possible nickname replacement.
“In the spirit of this commitment, I want to address a name that has emerged among our fans, ‘Warriors’. One could consider this name a natural transition, and even harmless given that it has not. necessarily or specifically a negative connotation. But as we have learned through our research and engagement with various groups, ‘context matters’ and that makes it a ‘slippery slope.’
“Comments from every community we’ve engaged with clearly revealed a deep-rooted unease around Warriors, with the clear recognition that it aligns too closely with Native American themes. We have advocated so vigorously for us to embrace. , and that, frankly, we set out to do when we started this process a year ago. ”
Wright said that due to the culture changes already made within the organization, the team’s new identity will have no connection with Native Americans.

According to the Washington Post on Saturday, Wright announced that the franchise will unveil its new name and logo in early 2022. The team is also expected to retain its burgundy and gold colors.
