Washington placed the franchise tag on right guard Brandon Scherff for the second year in a row, the team announced Monday night.
Scherff will receive $ 18.03 million in the 2021 season, a 20% increase from last season. But Washington is still hoping to sign him for a long-term deal. He has until July 15 to do so, and a source described the out-of-court talks.
Scherff, who turned 29 in December, starred with the franchise last season, earning $ 15.03 million. He also became the first Washington player to be named the first All-Pro team since punter Matt Turk in 1996. Scherff made four Pro Bowls, including the last two.
The coaches liked the way Scherff played on the inside, but also the way he blocked on the move in the screen game.
But injuries have also been a problem. Scherff hasn’t played all 16 games since 2016 and has missed 18 combined games in the past four years. He ended up on the casualty reserve in 2017 and 2018.
Washington selected Scherff with the fifth overall pick in the 2015 draft, intending to try him on the right tackle first. But Washington moved him to right guard early in their first camp and started Morgan Moses on the tackle, creating a solid tandem down the right side.
In Iowa, Scherff was named the 2014 Outland Trophy winner as the nation’s top offensive lineman.
