The Washington football team has a new general manager.

The franchise has hired San Francisco 49ers executive Martin Mayhew for the post, NFL network insider Ian Rapoport reported Thursday.

Marty Hurney, who was previously in the process of finalizing a deal to become chief executive, will now be appointed to a high-level front office position, Rapoport added.

After meeting with Washington officials on Monday, things seemed to be falling into place for Hurney to reunite with Ron Rivera and serve in the same capacity he did alongside Rivera in Carolina for five years. Today, just over 48 hours later, the club have changed positions.

After a nine-year stint as an NFL cornerback from 1988 to 1996, Mayhew moved on to a behind-the-scenes role after graduating from Georgetown University Law Center in 2000.

Mayhew, an NFL executive since 2001, will enter his second stint as general manager, with his first coming via a promotion with the Detroit Lions. After serving as Senior Director of Football Administration for two years before moving on to Senior Vice President and Assistant General Manager from 2004 to 2008, Mayhew was elevated to General Manager in 2008 and is remained in office until 2015.

Mayhew left Motor City for the Big Apple in 2016 where he took charge of the Giants’ football operations. He then moved to San Fran in 2017 where he was the club’s senior staff manager for two years before becoming vice president of player staff in 2019.

In another organizational change, Jennifer King will become a full-time offensive assistant for Washington after spending last season as a coaching intern, Rapoport reported, according to an informed source.

The 2020 season was King’s first among coaches after spending 2018 and 2019 interning during the offseason and during training camp for the Panthers. She was also an assistant at Dartmouth and the now defunct Alliance of American Football.
