All signs were pointing to Marty Hurney becoming the new GM of the Washington football team. According to some reports, San Francisco 49ers vice president of player personnel Martin Mayhew joined him as a “high-ranking executive with a title to be determined.” Instead, ESPN’s John Keim reports that Mayhew will have the title of CEO.

What will Hurney’s title be? He is actually the one who will have a high-ranking role in the Washington front office, not Mayhew.

That means GM John Lynch and the company will receive another compensatory third-round pick as part of the NFL’s minority hiring program, giving the 49ers additional selection in each of the next three drafts. San Francisco was already set to receive a third-round pick in each of the next two drafts after the New York Jets hired former 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh as their head coach.

Mayhew has experience as a general manager. He served in the role with the Detroit Lions from 2008 to 2015, and his teams made the playoffs twice during that time. Mayhew also held other leadership positions with the New York Lions and Giants.

Lynch hired Mayhew in 2017 as a personal senior executive and promoted him to vice president of player personnel in 2019.
