Taylor Heinicke’s career path after the NFL will be on hold again.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Wednesday that the Washington football team had agreed to the terms of a two-year extension for Heinicke worth $ 8.75 million, the sources said.

Rapoport added that the deal also includes incentives based on the number of games it starts.

Heinicke was to be a restricted free agent.

“It’s a good feeling,” Heinicke told Washington senior vice president of media and content Julie Donaldson on Wednesday. “Everyone knows I was home taking math lessons… so for this upcoming contact, it’s a big sigh of relief. I’m really excited. This is the place I go. wanted to be, so everything went pretty well, and I’m really excited to be back. “

Washington pulled Heinicke out of engineering classes at Old Dominion in December after a rash of injuries ravaged the team’s QB room. The 27-year-old may delay using these engineering skills a bit longer.

After joining Washington at the end of the season, Heinicke replaced an ineffective Dwayne Haskins in Week 16, almost causing a comeback against Carolina.

Alex Smith returned for the Week 17 victory that propelled Washington to the playoffs. The club cut Haskins off and an injury prevented Smith from playing in the playoffs.

The confluence of circumstances led Heinicke to start the wildcard game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The QB impressed in the pressure-filled start, completing 26 for 44 passes for 306 yards, a TD and an INT while adding six carries for 46 yards and another score. Against a defense that would continue to stifle the likes of Drew Brees and possibly Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl while taking out Aaron Rodgers along the way, Heinicke’s performance against the Champions deserves praise.

Smith remains under contract, but his future remains in question due to his latest injury. Kyle Allen, who suffered a late season injury after four starts, is an exclusive rights free agent.

Heinicke’s new contract answers the first of a series of questions regarding Room Washington QB. The next one is whether Ron Rivera adds another veteran to the free agency mix, a high draft pick or all of the above in 2021.
