The Washingtonian, a magazine based in the nation’s capital, provided a new twist to the story of DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, who was filmed without wearing a mask indoors at a wedding despite his new order reinstating the wearing of masks inside, regardless of vaccination status. The scoop was that the reporter who first reported the story was not invited to the wedding. Twitter users scoffed at what many saw as the Washingtonian’s attempt to excuse the hypocrisy of Bowser’s mask.
Over the weekend, various photos emerged of Bowser attending events without a mask in blatant disregard of his new tenure as a mask. Most notably, the Democratic mayor appeared at a wedding she performed at The Line DC hotel in the Adams Morgan area of the district. Although Bowser’s office told Fox News that the mayor “wore a mask indoors as per warrant,” a photo provided by The Washington Examiner showed this not to be true.
The Washingtonian reported on the Bowser scandal on Monday, but added a new detail and shared it in a tweet.
“UPDATE: The Washington Examiner writer who posted photos of Mayor Bowser without a mask at a wedding this weekend was not invited to the wedding,” the magazine explained.

Washington Examiner reporter Tiana Lowe was the first to report that Bowser was not wearing a mask indoors and provided a photo that shows Bowser at a table without a mask.
Bowser’s office released a statement saying that if the mayor took off her mask, it was because she was eating or drinking.
“If Mayor Bowser was photographed indoors without a mask, it was during dinner inside, when she was eating or drinking,” a statement from her office read. “The mayor wore a mask indoors as per the mandate, and the organizers and site staff worked to create a safe environment for staff and guests.”
The Washingtonian did not deny the validity of the footage, but suggested that Bowser was complying with the warrant by eating and drinking only on an exceptional basis.
“It’s not clear from the photo whether Bowser ate or drank – according to the new indoor mask mandate, that’s a qualifying reason to remove your mask,” the Washingtonian wrote.
Nonetheless, this update was viewed at best insignificant and grim at worst by Twitter users.
“The level of simping is strong with this one,” commented Curtis Houck, editor of Newsbusters.
Former Washington Examiner reporter Anthony Leonardi tweeted: “This is literally how most journalism business is done. Lol.”
“Everyone knows that you are only allowed to report on the powerful under their direction and only with their express permission,” Washington Examiner commentator T. Becket Adams said.
Lowe, did not respond to the Washingtonian’s request for comment. However, Lowe then commented on the article from his own Twitter account.
“LMAO, I have already said that I was not invited this morning on @WMALDC with @LarryOConnor & @amber_athey. When a journalist obtains information that an elected official is breaking her own law, she has a professional duty to … report the news. A new concept these days, I know. “Lowe tweeted.
She also added, “The real moral of this story: I’m going to pursue the tips and stories that a lot of the DC press won’t. My DMs are open and my email is public. Send me advice on politicians of all political stripes and I’ll ‘I’ll get the story whether or not I’ve been’ invited ‘to the party. “

Corporate media pundits also appeared to downplay Bowser’s actions by ignoring the story or trying to excuse him. The Washington Post, New York Times and MSNBC initially ignored the story until Bowser’s comments on the matter as CNN hosts attempted to justify his actions.
“I understand, if you’re a politician you don’t want a photo that raises questions, that’s bad politics. The question is whether she did something functionally, politically wrong. and I don’t know, ”CNN said. The current mask warrant in Washington DC directs anyone over the age of 2 to wear a mask indoors, regardless of their immunization status.
