Washington football team thinks it looks “very promising” for quarterback Alex Smith to start Sunday night against the Philadelphia Eagles, but the team want to see how his calf feels during pre-game warm-ups before making a final decision, a source told ESPN’s Adam. Schefter.
Smith, who trained for a second straight day on Friday, is considered questionable for Sunday’s game, but a source said Washington plans to have him start, as has been the case all week.
Washington (6-9) will win the NFC East if they beat the Eagles (4-10-1). The team lost two straight games with Smith unable to play.
Smith practiced two consecutive days for the first time since suffering from a strained right calf in a Dec. 13 game against San Francisco. Last week, Smith only trained on the Friday before the game; his calf did not respond well the next day and he missed his second game in a row.
If Smith can’t play, it would go to Taylor Heinicke, who relieved Dwayne Haskins Jr. in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 20-13 loss to Carolina. In two practices, Heinicke completed 12 of 19 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown.
Haskins was released on Monday after struggling on the ground and breaking COVID-19 protocols.
Washington signed Heinicke on December 8 on its practice squad; he has been on the active list the last two games.
