A herd of around 75 Holstein calves tumbled down an Indiana road after escaping from a nearby farm.
Captain Derek Allen, an officer on leave who was nearby in his department’s police cruiser, quickly turned around on Saturday when he saw cows running around LaPorte County.

“It’s really important to note that these cows weren’t just walking, they were galloping, if you will,” Allen told the South Bend Tribune.
He quickly moved in front of the herd and continued with his flashing police lights to warn oncoming traffic.
Allen, with LaPorte County Det. Jim Fish, along with a number of volunteer firefighters and other onlookers, began to round up the calves as they moved south.
“I’ve been involved in a lot of unique situations before, but not something with so many animals on the pavement,” Allen said.
Although few cows were herded near a fenced area between CR 600 and CR 700 South, the majority of the herd continued to move on Range Road, a few miles north of Kingsford Heights.
Eventually all the cows are counted, Allen said, and no injuries have been reported to human bystanders or livestock.
Police refused to identify the farmer whose cows had escaped.

Allen attributed the absence of injuries to the County Police Car Pickup Program, which allowed him and Fish to direct traffic quickly and efficiently.
“This take-out car program is very beneficial in serving the citizens of the county, and in this specific case it worked really well as I was driving to this event in my vehicle and was in the right place. at the right time, ”Allen said.
