Caleb Plant and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez had to overcome negotiating hurdles to finally strike a deal to meet in a November 6 clash to crown an undisputed super middleweight champion. These obstacles led to serious misunderstandings that spilled over violently at a press conference on Tuesday to officially announce Showtime’s pay-per-view fight.

After both sides engaged in an extended gaze at the press conference, Alvarez gave Plant a chest thrust. Plant fought back and started throwing punches in Alvarez’s direction, the latter firing back. Security managed to separate the two sides as their camps also started exchanging words.

The scuffle left Plant bleeding from a gash under his right eye. The severity of the cut could impact the status of the fight. If he’s bad enough to require a break in Plant’s training for the biggest fight of his career, it could result in the fight being postponed, although medical attention will be needed to determine if such steps are necessary.

“It’s a fight,” Plant said. “If he wants to make it into a fight, then that’s what it is. I’m not a punk. You can’t just stand up here and do whatever you want with me. Just come here and they’ve got it. all scared of you. This is how it works now.

Plant holds the IBF Super Middleweight Championship while Alvarez is the WBA, WBC and WBO champion at weight. The two had previously derailed negotiations for a fight scheduled for September, only to overcome those obstacles and book the fight for November.
