Iron Maiden is back, back, back! After teasing their comeback with a succession of clever cryptic clues in recent weeks, the British metal legends have burst in with their first new music in six years and their first single since 2016 Cloud empire, the exciting Writing on the wall.
Written by guitarist Adrian Smith and singer Bruce Dickinson, Writing on the wall was produced by Kevin Shirley and co-produced by Maiden bassist and conductor Steve Harris.
The animated video while in action for Writing on the wall was made with the help of two former Pixar executives – and longtime Maiden fans – Mark Andrews and Andrew Gordon, who also helped create family favorites. The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Brave, Monsters, Inc. and The world of Nemo among others.
So you might expect the video to be pretty impressive – and you’d be right. It features a host of bizarre and interesting characters including a suit and booted American Donald Trump sitting in the sort of stretch limousine President John F Kennedy was killed in, two faceless British gentlemen in bowler hats with their tailored pants around the ankles and their exposed Union Jack boxers, a few random bizarre humanoids and no less than four masked Eddies on motorcycles – including Mayan Eddie from The Book of Souls and Cyborg Eddie from Somewhere in time – tear apart and wreak joyous havoc. As the tale unfolds, a new Eddie – Samurai Eddie! – is revealed, with our new hero quickly sending many peripheral characters by cutting them into shreds.
Manuel Eddie.
On the video, Dickinson says: “I had a pretty good idea of the concept to go with the song and when I met Mark and Andrew on Zoom it quickly became clear that we were all very much on the same pitch. wave, and it got stronger. plus [director] Nicos and his young team BlinkInk. Our weekly Zoom team meetings then were generally both very creative and a lot of fun!
“I’m very proud of how the video turned out, it’s more like a mini-movie really. I knew it was going to work as soon as Mark brought my treatment to life with his amazing storyboards – I thought we could do something very special together. I think we did and I hope our fans will agree. In fact, it’s pretty much created by Maiden fans!
Director Nicos Livesey says: “We quickly found the expertise we were looking for, and people literally pounced on me to work on a Maiden video – we had over 60 people in 13 countries, from Brazil to France. and from Romania to the United States to add. something to the clip and I would say their love, passion and understanding of the band shines through every frame. It was a dream team for the producers and myself to manage.
