Everyone is obsessed with WandaVision, including, apparently, Jimmy Fallon. He’s so obsessed that he even imagined himself inside the TV show about a grieving Marvel superhero pictured in other TV shows. Children, feel free to use this phrase in English class when your teacher asks you to explain what “meta” means.
In a new skit titled “FallonVision,” which debuts right here on Vulture ahead of its airing on Fallon’s late night show Tonight, the host jumps back in time and multiple iterations of The show tonight. Elizabeth Olsen, the star of WandaVision and a guest on Tonight’s show Tonight is present throughout the journey as the guest actress who still behaves appropriately for a decade. “The water?” she said in the 1950s, before taking a sip and adding, “Well, that’s a weird way of saying ‘rum punch’.” In the 1970s, she smoked a cigarette (not necessarily nicotine) on live television.
Much like in the Disney + series, it eventually becomes clear that Fallon is beaming through classic television as a way to escape his grief about what happens in real life in 2021. There is also a twist at the end which suggests another WandaVision the character may be responsible for all of this. [Wink.]
Director Chris Tartaro, who filmed and edited numerous pre-recorded sketches for Fallon during his tenure on the two Late at night and Tonight’s show, jumped on the phone less than an hour after capturing the last shot of the sketch to explain how it all came together. Take a look at the sketch first, as the spoilers are below.
After the idea was conceived and refined by Fallon and his Writers’ Room, the first step was to confirm that Olsen, already booked as a Wednesday guest, was ready to participate in the tribute. She was, although she had to improvise a bit when wigs and other accessories couldn’t get shipped to her quickly enough. (Olsen is currently filming in London Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.) “She took her on Sunday to do this with her team, and they didn’t have any costumes, and they just used what they had,” Tartaro says. The sets of all previous incarnations of Tonight’s show, including backgrounds from the 50s, 70s, 90s, and 00s were built into smaller incarnations that allowed Fallon to film all of his retro segments in one night of production. As for the hosts he channeled, the 1950s were specifically Steve Allen, but Tartaro says the others were a mix.
“In the ’70s I think he was sort of a combo of Tom Snyder, Dick Cavett and Johnny Carson,” Tartaro says, while Fallon’s’ 90s talk show channeled pieces from David Letterman, Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien. (Followed, of course, by a tribute to Fallon’s former hosting gig on NBC’s Late at night in the early 2010s.)
As for the fabulous button at the end of the sketch – the revelation of Kathryn Hahn – that part was shot yesterday. And yes, she sang “It Was Kathryn Hahn All Along” herself, because of course she did.
“She was very playful and perfect right away, which… I can’t say enough nice things about her,” Tartaro says. He can’t, and neither can the Internet.
