LEE COUNTY, Fla – It’s a day the Wilbanks family will never forget.

Richard Wilbanks said he was enjoying a beautiful fall day with his new puppy outside, when everything changed in the blink of an eye.

Gunner, the Wildbanks’ new dog, began to cry for help.

Wildbanks said an alligator had Gunner on hand, which caused him to jump off his lawn chair to save the pup.

“Instincts have taken over. The adrenaline kicked in and I just went straight into the water after the alligator and the gunner, ”Wilbanks said.

The heroic but dangerous action was captured on video by the Florida Wildlife Federation.

The FWF has partnered with the fSTOP Foundation to avoid moments like Wilbanks. The partnership felt it was important to share the video as it was a good time to learn.

“If we know how to deal with it [wildlife], how to interact with them. The result is always positive ”, explained William Freund of the fStop Foundation.

Freund wants people to realize that you should always be careful with pets around area alligators or any predators of small animals. He has seen too many times that this type of situation does not go well.

However, he was delighted to know that the Wilbanks story had a happy ending.

“I was happy to hear Gunner was okay, so was Rick and the alligator. So everything went well in this story, ”said Freund.
