Watch Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City First Trailer

I’m not sure it’s possible that my expectations were lower than they are for any Resident Evil movie project, but the subtitle “Welcome To Raccoon City” might have lowered them further. . Luckily, I just watched the first official trailer, and hey, that sounds like fun! It looks competent.

I’m not a fan of Paul WS Anderson’s many films, but Welcome To Raccoon City is a full reboot with a new cast and a new director. It also seeks to get closer to the source material. The trailer above shows Leon, Claire, Jill, and Wesker exploring familiar locations from the games, including a dusty old mansion, exterior glimpses of the police station, and even specific snaps straight from the games.

The original games weren’t exactly high art, of course, and I don’t need all the adaptations to be authentic. But if you make a Resident Evil movie without the enduring elements of the original games, then it could just as well be any other zombie / mutant / horror movie.

It helps that, with a few raw CG monsters aside, Welcome To Raccoon City doesn’t look as cheap and poorly played as the previous films. I’m encouraged by the appearance of Neal McDonough as Birkin, as McDonough appears almost exclusively in Pleasant Trash and makes it 10% better every time.

Welcome To Raccoon City hits theaters in the US on November 24, with a UK release on December 3. It should not be confused with Netflix’s Resident Evil live-action series featuring Lance Reddick as Wesker.
