Sting and Shaggy might not be the most likely musical couple. But one thing is certain, they love to play everyone's music. On a beautiful autumn morning, the legends arrived at the NPR Music office, blue eyes, but excited to play for the diverse staff of Shaggy and Sting fans. What surprised many of my NPR colleagues is the quality of the collaboration.
Their success as a duo should not be a total shock. After all, beating a lot of police songs (the famous Sting band in the 70s and 80s) is a reggae backbeat. It's impossible not to hear the influence of classics such as "Walking On The Moon" and "So Lonely".
Shaggy (zoinks! – his war name comes from the Scooby-Doo character) was born in Kingston, Jamaica. He moved to New York at the age of 18 and his music evokes only good vibrations. The positive energy that he brought to their opening song, "Englishman [[[[and Jamaican] At New York," Everyone in the room smiled "like reggae early in the morning," as he said. After the melody, Sting announced "I've never sung this song before 8 pm … never!"
The hoarse and familiar voice of Sting was accompanied by his 1957 Fender Precision bass, beaten for more than 25 years. His guitarist and long-time collaborator, Dominic Miller, played acoustic guitar to the rhythm of reggae and co-wrote the beautiful film "Shape Of My Heart". This song is mixed with Juice World's "Lucid Dream", sung by Gene Noble, offering a refreshing contrast to Sting's nuanced melody.
Shaggy affectionately calls his collaborator "Stingy", putting his arm around him at half-performance. It's easy to see the camaraderie that comes with music common to these veteran musicians, not to mention the breath of fresh air that they bring to everyone's music.
