The beloved, intriguing and mysterious science fiction show The extentThe last season of on Amazon is near. Season 6 arrives on December 10, and the company just released the final trailer at New York Comic Con and on YouTube (you can watch it immediately above). It will only last six episodes, airing every Friday on Amazon Prime Video and ending on January 14, 2022.

If you fervently followed The extent, you know things are Wrong in the world of entertainment. Earth is on fire, beloved characters have died, and a mass murderer is gaining tremendous support.

Here’s how Amazon describes Season 6:

The sixth and final season of The Expanse picks up with the solar system at war, as Marco Inaros and his Free Navy continue to launch devastating asteroid attacks on Earth and Mars. As the tensions of war and shared losses threaten to tear the Rocinante’s crew apart, Chrisjen Avasarala makes a bold move and sends former Martian Bobbie Draper on a secret mission that could turn the tide of the conflict. Meanwhile, in the Belt, Drummer and what remains of his family are on the run after betraying Marco. And on a distant planet beyond the Rings, a new power begins to rise.

How can Amazon complete the series in just six episodes? (A colleague points out to me that the books devote three whole novels exploring that current story arc in the series.) Well, hopefully Amazon doesn’t exactly tie it up with an arc. While the company saved the show in 2018 after it was canceled by SyFy, showrunner Naren Shankar and actress Dominique Tipper (who plays Naomi) both hinted Weekly entertainment that there could also be life after Amazon.

Maybe Netflix, Hulu, or even Apple TV Plus (remember, Apple caught Foundation, a show based on a foundational science fiction work) could intervene?

When Collider Interviewing the show’s producers (who are also the authors of the books, by the way) in February, it looked like they were going to leave room for more:

I think what season six does is it pays the story we started in episode one of season one where the Martians, Earthlings, and Belters were all in this incredibly awkward political system. comfortable and unstable with the Belters absolutely at the foot of that table and everyone fighting for their place in the solar system. I think we are paying for this story in a very satisfying way. And we keep intact part of the mystery involving the greatest forces in the universe that humans are only beginning to realize. If we want to tell more stories.

There is now a shadow hanging over the series that could make it less appealing to acquire: The extentthe showrunners wrote the character of Cas Anvar (Rocinante pilot Alex Kamal) completely out of the series after being accused of sexual harassment and assault by numerous women.
