Watch the trailer for ‘Zola’, a Twitter feed turned into a movie

A24 shared the first trailer for Zola, a film based on a now infamous 148-part Twitter feed from 2015 (via Variety). Written by Aziah “Zola” King, the thread chronicles a road trip she took with a woman named Jessica. In the film, the two are played by Taylour Paige and Riley Keough. After meeting at the Hooters where King was working at the time, the two decided to travel to Florida to earn money dancing in strip clubs. As you can imagine, things quickly got weird and unsavory. Wells has since admitted that parts of the story she shared on Twitter were exaggerated, but the film itself garnered praise during its festival.

Twitter may seem like a strange place for Hollywood to turn to for ideas, but this isn’t the first time it has taken to social media for inspiration. For example, WarnerMedia announced last year that it was adapting the One Perfect Shot account to an HBO Max series. As for Zola, it hits theaters on June 30.
