The Washington football team was able to return to the winning column this Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons thanks to a JD McKissic touchdown scored with just 33 seconds left. But, Washington found itself the victim of an incredibly questionable penalty that left the NFL world confused.

At the end of the third quarter, the Falcons attempted to convert a fourth and two. Matt Ryan was chased by Chase Young, who inexplicably got his hands on the quarterback and pushed Ryan away without tackling him. Ryan then dropped to one knee and it was ruled as a sack. However, an official threw up his yellow flag and ruled that Young was guilty of brutalizing the smuggler.

Here are some different angles of play:

If we were playing devil’s advocate, I guess one could argue that Young put his hands on Ryan’s face. But on second glance, it looks like Young has just pushed Ryan’s shoulder pads. It even looks like Young was trying to let go so as not to be flagged for tackling the quarterback, but still took the penalty! It was a big penalty as the Falcons got a first down and they ended up scoring a touchdown that took their lead to eight points. Fortunately, the questionable call did not ultimately decide the game.

We’ll see if the NFL will issue a statement regarding this penalty, but you’d be hard pressed to find a party that claims the flag was warranted.
