More than 25 years later Water world blockbuster cinemas, producer John davis is ready to return off, as he develops a Water world streaming series that has Dan Trachtenberg attached to direct. “We’re going to do the streaming version of this movie, the sequel to this movie,” Davis said.
Water world star Kevin costner like The Mariner, an unnamed wanderer who navigates the Earth, which was inundated after the ice cap completely melted, forcing sea level to rise. The Sailor, whose body has mutated to adapt to his waterlogged environment, reluctantly agrees to help a woman (Jeanne Triplehorn) and a young girl (Tina Majorino) try to find a solid ground while they fight the famine and pass a group of outlaw “smokers” led by the deceased Dennis hopper.
The series is expected to follow characters from the original 1995 film, and although Davis didn’t mention any specific actors. he admitted it would be “20 years later. All these people, 20 years later.”
“We’re not 100% sure how the show will approach. But definitely, we’re in the construction phase right now,” added John fox, who has been Davis’ production partner at Davis Entertainment for almost a decade.
“Larry gordon and myself, we are the producers of this film. And with John, we’re all re-imagining him for the streaming version, ”said Davis, who admitted he had found a home for the series, though he declined to identify which streamer would be involved.
“Right now it’s at Universal Television, and we’re setting it up. But yes, we think it already has a home,” Fox added, possibly signaling a Peacock deal given the implication from Universal Television.
The project is still in the early stages of development, so there is no showrunner attached yet.
“We’re talking to people, but no one is locked up yet,” Fox said. “Dan is attached, we’re breaking the story now and we’re talking to a few different writers. And we should have one writer locked up, I think, over the next two weeks.”
Directed by Kevin reynolds, who wrote the original Red Dawn and had previously worked with Costner on Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Water world was the most expensive movie ever made at the time, and with a big target on its back, it drew mixed reviews from critics. The film grossed $ 264 million worldwide on an announced production budget of $ 175 million, and although it ultimately made a profit from a robust home video market and ancillary revenue streams, Water world was seen as a bummer, even though she might just be ahead of her time.
“The only movie I went back to recently that we did and watched and was surprised how well it held up is Water worldDavis said. “For many years I didn’t really want to see it because I thought the movie wasn’t working, that wasn’t what the script was, that wasn’t too good as the screenplay, it had its production issues. And then I came back and saw it again, and it’s like, ‘Oh yeah, this movie ages well over time.’ ”
Indeed, Water world offers simple pleasures that many soulless blockbusters lack today, and while far from perfect, the futuristic film deserves credit for its scope and ambition. It will certainly be interesting to see how Trachtenberg approaches this world, which seems ripe for a nascent streaming service like Peacock looking to adapt to Universal IP.
Trachtenberg made his directorial debut with 10 Cloverfield Way and he is currently shooting a new Predator movie, the working title of which is Skull, although that may very well change by the time of release. He also led the pilot of The boys, which further increased its stock within the industry. If anyone can save the fascinating premise at the heart of Water world and turn it into something special, it just might be him, especially if his Predator movie lives up to the initial hype.
