We don’t know when, how Preston Williams was injured

After scoring the touchdown that gave the Dolphins a 21-14 lead in the second quarter of Sunday’s game in Arizona, Dolphins wide receiver Preston Williams started to limp.

It emerged he suffered a right foot / ankle injury after Dolphins defensive tackle Christian Wilkins jumped towards and partially landed on Williams during the celebration. Williams quickly began to favor his right foot as he returned to the sideline.

He then entered the pop-up medical tent for a preliminary assessment. When Williams was taken on board, his left and right feet were bare.

This is potentially important because, as Williams fell into the end zone, Cardinals safety Jalen Thompson executed a Tristan Hill-style barrel roll while grabbing Williams’ left leg. Williams may have injured his left foot during the tackle and his right foot during the celebration.

Coach Brian Flores was asked whether the celebration hurt Williams, based on social media speculation as to the cause.

“I’m not very present on social media so I don’t know what’s there or what’s not there,” Flores said. “Preston was obviously injured. He didn’t come back. Honestly, when and how it happened – I don’t think that’s what happened. How did it happen? It’s not on the coach’s copy, but it looked like it was during play, from what I saw. But I do not know. Maybe it was somewhere else. Obviously other people saw something else. I think the point is he’s been injured and hopefully – listen he’ll do whatever he can to come back and we’re just going to assess him day to day and take him day at a time.

It is not known when or how the injury occurred. It is not known if it is the left foot, the right foot or both. Wednesday’s practice report may shed some light on the situation, unless Williams has fully recovered and is not listed at all.
