At the Oculus At the Connect Developer Conference, one of the company's experienced executives presented some information about the end of its best-selling product. "As we move into the future with Quest, it's probably time for me to give a little praise to Gear VR," CTO John Carmack told the audience.

Carmack said the current software was up-to-date, but Samsung's latest and future phones would not support the headset and its "days were numbered."

"I think we missed an opportunity here," said John Carmack. "I put a lot of effort into it and that's the basis on which we based all the moving parts."

The helmet was launched for the first time in 2014 with an Innovator edition supporting Note 4 and having undergone numerous editions with minor adjustments to the size and on-board electronic components of the helmet. Users can insert their Samsung phones into the headset, which will launch the Oculus software and showcase.

Carmack said the line of headsets was by far the company's best selling, but was also the least retentive of users, following Rift, Quest and Go. This is not surprising. given the friction it took to embark on an experiment and the number of headsets that were distributed free of charge in bulk purchasing.
