We played at the opening 20 minutes of the Avengers at Gamescom, which consisted of a prologue game presented at both E3 and San Diego International Comic-Con 2019. But really getting hold of Avengers really clarified the game's operation moment by moment, and Square Enix's presentation helped us understand what the larger Avengers picture looks like.

The A-Day level takes you through a cinematic battle on the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, a pretty track-based experience. While Taskmaster henchmen attack the bridge, you take turns taking over the Avengers and get an idea of ​​how they handle them. The fight is mainly melee, and each Avenger has a light attack and a heavy attack, as well as a quick dodge that allows them to get out of trouble. The imminent enemy attacks are indicated by indicators on the screen to tell you when you need to move. In addition, if you hold down the attack buttons, different versions of the attacks are triggered. You test each A-Day character and you understand their strengths and weaknesses. Thor is great for controlling the crowd and dealing with groups of melee fighters, while Iron Man can fly over the battlefield and defeat more irritating foes. Hulk is more or less a fleeing train, capturing enemies and crushing them against each other to send them quickly or jumping into the air as a result of devastating impact attacks during the landing. Black Widow can launch a punch on the enemies so that they throw themselves at them for melee combos, or that they shoot with a pair of handguns. And the shield of Cape means that he can get close to dangerous enemies and avoid their attacks.

The Avengers' basic fight has the feel of something like Spider-Man or God of War. You have a handful of close combat techniques, ranged attacks and powerful "heroic" moves that charge you and let you trigger things like Sonic Clap Hulk or Unibeam Iron Man, swinging multiple enemies and inflicting significant damage. Everyone plays pretty much the same way so you can flirt with any hero and get to work, with key differences depending on their abilities and powers that make them all distinct.

The fight is satisfying thanks to the magnitude of the movements that you have at your disposal. The heart of the Avengers' fight encourages you to chain the moves to keep opponents out of balance. A guy with Thor's hammer sends him flying before throwing Mjolnir to another and trapping him against a truck has the same kind of fluidity as other big third-person action games. Each hero has his own abilities and requires a different style, adding variety to the fighting. At least in the brief part we played, Avengers did a pretty good job in making you feel like you're living in one of Earth's most powerful heroes, with its unique set of powers.

The prologue ends with Black Widow who confronts Taskmaster alone, in a brawl full of incentives for quick events while she dodges the Jetpack powered scam dives. Widow must constantly change tactics to adapt to Taskmaster's ability to adapt to his style, but relies heavily on prompts, and therefore feels tightly controlled. According to Rich Briggs, brand manager at Crystal Dynamics, the game will move away from QTE shortly after the prologue. The goal is always to create a story-driven, story-based action game, but do not expect it to work as intended. Briggs said that players can expect big, open levels.

Once you finish A-Day, says Briggs, Avengers opens. The game includes two types of missions: story missions that will look a bit like A-Day, but focus on one hero at a time; and war zones, which are more flexible missions that you can play in cooperation with up to three other people. Recruiting the characters brings them back to a salvage helicopter that you will use as a base of operations, adding them to the team that you can then undertake in more missions. However, they will have to be convincing. Tony Stark is retired from the world because he thinks he has failed. Thor abandoned Mjolnir at the Cape Memorial site and no longer feels worthy of fighting as a hero; Black Widow is back in his life as a solitary spy. and the anguish of Bruce Banner imprisoned him in a Hulk state, unable to return to his human form.

As you progress through the story, you will unlock new Story and Warzone missions that you can choose to play at your own pace, spread all over the world. Briggs said that all missions will be included in the story; completing a scenario mission can give you access to new war zones, and ending such a zone could in turn unlock more missions of both types.

But while story missions are what Crystal Dynamics once called the Avengers Custom Campaign, Warzone games have a more open flavor. Playable alone or in cooperation, they are a little more generic in the sense that they send you to calm the "hot spots" of conflict, but have less narrative connivance. You can bring any hero you have recruited into the war zones and missions are dynamic based on the heroes you bring to fight, as well as their powers and abilities. All missions include a power level ranking number when you see them on the world map, which gives you an idea of ​​what you will encounter – but you also set your own difficulty levels for missions.

It's here that the Avengers are starting to get closer to the end of the spectrum of the live, more loot-oriented parties. Complete missions help you increase the level of your heroes, allowing you to customize them using skill trees, unlocking new moves, abilities and combos. Over time, your Tony Stark will become different from that of another player depending on your choices. At the same time, you will also gain equipment during your missions to equip your heroes. As in Destiny, Anthem or Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, this equipment is offered in a variety of rarities, and the rarer it is, the more powerful it is. Briggs unveiled a few equipment drops for Iron Man, including armor pieces offering additional benefits to increase some of his stats and abilities. You will also be able to recover complete equipment for additional bonuses.

Speed ​​declines occur mainly in the form of mission rewards, and the missions you undertake tell you what kind of rewards you can expect to complete so that you can take on more challenging challenges to get better rewards.
