WeekInReview22

The Week in Review is a collection of all the goodness I’ve written over the past week on the internet, plus a small bunch of links I’ve found interesting – usually related to endurance sports. I have often wondered what to do with all the freshness that people write, and although I share a lot on Twitter and Facebook is a better forum to send it to all of you. Most of the time, these different streams don’t overlap, so be on the lookout for all these places for good stuff!

So with that, let’s take action!

Sports technology offerings to note:

We are currently in the lull between Amazon Prime Day a few weeks ago and the start of Black Friday sales in November. Still, there are some decent options. Oh, you can still access all the deals at dcrainmaker.com/deals

Also – Backcountry.com has a 20% discount on the sale of an item right now. While this doesn’t hold true for most sports technology products you might want, it does hold true for a lot of other support equipment that you probably use. Using this link you will see the 20% coupon on the homepage to add to your cart. Plus, it helps support the site here.

Product Sale price Amazon Sales Notes
Apple Airpods (2nd Generation) – $ 50 off
$ 159
$ 99 ⚡⚡ This is the lowest price ever for AirPods – it’s solid! I use AirPods mainly when I travel just to listen in airports, airplanes etc. I don’t tend to use them for training because of their drop. Also, with the wireless charging case for $ 50 off. Personally, I just use the basic model.
Apple Airpods Pro – $ 55 off
$ 249
$ 194 ⚡ This is the lowest AirPods Pro ever, even lower than Amazon Prime Day deals.
Apple Watch SE – $ 50 off
$ 279
$ 229 This is the first time we’ve seen the Apple Watch SE on sale, and $ 50 off is a hell of a deal, given that the much more expensive Apple Watch series tends to be only on sale for $ 15 to $ 25. at a time.
Apple Watch Series 3 (38mm)
$ 169 – $ 179
$ 169 This is the lowest price we’ve ever seen for the Apple Watch Series 3. While the Series 5 is the new one, the Series 3 has almost all of the same features (and still gets all the updates). It has dropped to $ 179 a few times, but only once for Black Friday to $ 169.
DJI OSMO Action (Action Cam) – Normally $ 329
$ 349
$ 249 That’s a solid price tag for the DJI OSMO Action, and it’s a very strong first competitor for DJI to compete with the Hero 7 Black (realistically, except for the dual screen, it just doesn’t compete with Hero 8 or Hero 9). I really like the elements of OSMO Action, but especially the dual screen. Check out my full review for comparative thoughts. While I would have said we might see some new OSMO action last spring (an annual refresh cycle), I’m pretty sure COVID19 has killed any chance of this happening for a while.
Garmin HRM-DUAL (ANT + / Bluetooth Smart Strap) – $ 15 off
$ 69
$ 56 ⚡ This is one of my favorite straps these days (ANT + and two simultaneous BLE connections). It has been on sale intermittently, but it’s about the lowest we’ve seen.
Garmin Instinct – $ 30 off
$ 299
$ 220 Sure, the new solar variants came out this summer with a few new features, but basically the Instincts are mostly the same. It was a bit cheaper on Amazon Prime Days ($ 149), so $ 30 off isn’t really a big deal (it’s normally $ 250).
Garmin Tactix Charlie – $ 150 off $ 599 The Tactix Charlie is basically a Fenix intended for the military (Amazon Prime Days)
Garmin Vivoactive 4 / 4S – $ 40 off
$ 299
$ 269 This is Garmin’s current bid to compete with the Apple Watch series (alongside the Garmin Venu), and it’s a good price, however, not as low as we’ve seen for Amazon Prime Day at 199 $.
Samsung Galaxy Buds True Wireless Earphones – $ 20 off $ 109 These are obviously very popular and their 31% discount should make them even more popular. Wireless charging case included.

DCRAINMAKER.COM posts last week:

Here’s everything that ended up on the main page last week:

Tuesday: Tuesday Tidbits: Quarq Bitter Battery Warning, COROS Major Firmware Update, Garmin Major FR245 / FR945 Updates
Wednesday: DJI Mini 2 In-Depth Review

A little quieter week on the site, a busier week on YouTube, and behind the scenes work on next week’s posts. Enjoy!

YouTube videos from last week:

Here’s what hit the hits on the You of Tube, definitely don’t forget to subscribe to be notified of videos the second they arrive!

Things I found interesting in the Interwebs:

Here’s a not-so-small rundown of all the random things I came across while doing my civic duty to find the end of the internet:

1) The full Garmin Developer Virtual Conference presentations are now available: You can watch most of them, and while I haven’t had a chance to listen to them all yet, there are usually some solid nuggets behind the scenes at these presentations. Often especially those of the commercial track (like this one). Plus, semi-linked, it’s cool to see almost 30,000 people listened to my full 45-minute presentation on the state of sports technology. But the smart comments in the comments section are even cooler. YouTube often has the comments section’s (generally correct) reputation as a dumpster fire. But this is a fine example of this is not the case. Also, somewhat surprisingly, assuming people got past the first 60 seconds, almost 60% made it past the full 45 minutes afterwards. It’s crazy for YouTube. Which isn’t to say “ Oh, people liked it ” – but to point out that there is an audience for long-lasting fitness tech on YouTube. Much like last year when DesFit and I made a 34-minute video together on smartwatches… which now has 300,000 views!

2) The AI camera system continually errs on bald football (soccer) Ref for the ball: To be honest, the guy’s head looks like a soccer ball.

3) Spotify can now stream to Apple Watch without a phone: But somehow impossible, you still can’t offline music on Apple Watch app. So, you need to be logged in for it to work (such as cellular).

4) Panasonic makes a gadget to save AirPods / etc from the train tracks: It’s not sports technology per se, but it’s tied enough that I find it super interesting.

5) Launch of the Magene P325 CS Power Meter Kickstarter: I generally think Magene makes good products. They mainly focus on the Asian market, with the greatest depth in China. But they’re also teaming up with some big Western sports tech companies for OEMs. So, I’m a little surprised to see a company very well established on Kickstarter. Everything about marketing. I have not yet tested this device. Maybe soon.

6) Fitbit posted strong third quarter results: It’s worth noting that this probably wouldn’t have included a significant number of their newer Sense / Versa 3 units, since these only started shipping on the last days of the quarter.

seven) And yes, Peloton posted strong third quarter results: Just like Garmin, but in the case of Peloton, they’ve managed to ship some 243,000 smart bikes to consumers. Still, the waiting list is mostly in the period from December to January at this time. A little crazy. Still, for the next quarter they expect to ship roughly the same number of units – which tells you that they haven’t quite found a way to add additional manufacturing capacity yet.

8) Livestream with Dave from Chase The Summit: Since there hadn’t been a “Week in Review” last week, I didn’t have a place to stick this. But you can sit back and listen to an hour of chatting about the sports tech geek, plus many random historical bits and bobs from DCR.

Sports Tech device firmware updates this week:

Every week I quickly highlight some of the new firmware, app, software, and website service updates that I see coming out. If you’re a sports tech company posting an update drop me a quick note (just one line is perfect, or Tweet it to me is even better) and I’ll mention it here. . If I am not aware, I will not be able to post about it. It sounds good? Oh – and if you want to get a head start on things, this page is a great resource for looking at Garmin, Wahoo, Polar, and a few other firmware updates.

BETA Firmware Update for Garmin Edge 530/830/1030/1030 Plus Series: Mainly minor fixes and CIQ additions.

BETA Firmware Update for Garmin Venu and Vivoactive 4 Series: These are mostly fixes, but I noticed the ability to set / calibrate the elevation of Garmin Connect Mobile which is definitely new to the Garmin world.

Garmin FR245 / 745/945 BETA Firmware Update: Just bug fixes.

Hammerhead Karoo series firmware update: added navigation guides, quick action menu, banners on the go, battery saving mode and more.

With that – thanks for reading it all!
