Weezer shared his new song “All My Favorite Songs”, the first single from the band’s new surprise album. OK Human, released on January 29. In the accompanying video Colin Read, the group straddles the line between the virtual world and reality.

The video opens with Rivers Cuomo distracted from scrolling on his phone, as he is expected to pose a track in the studio with the band. Meanwhile, in another scene, a teenager appears dejected as he watches his computer feed. Things get better when the teenager hooks up with an on-screen girl and their virtual encounter turns into a real encounter as he shoots her through his computer. They end up in a studio where Weezer records “All My Favorite Songs”.

“All my favorite songs are slow and sad / All my favorite people drive me crazy,” Cuomo sings as he plays the piano on the track buoyed by the orchestra. “Everything that is so good is bad, bad, bad / All of my favorite songs are slow and sad / I don’t know what’s wrong with me.” However, when the teenager attempts to converse with Cuomo afterwards, the singer is too engrossed in his cell phone screen, and the human connection that seemed to be restored seems lost.

OK Human was created at a time when instruments for human play were a thing of the past. All we could do was go back to the old days when humans really mattered and the dark tech takeover fantasy didn’t exist, ”the group wrote in a caption for the visual. “We used our instruments to connect to the 1960s and 1970s and, with the orchestra, to the 18th and 19th centuries. We had no click track, loops, or hi-tech sounds. Not even an electric guitar.

OK Humanthe arrival of At Weezer, the band’s 2020 riff-heavy album which has been postponed since May 7.

Although OK HumanRadiohead’s track is a nod to Radiohead’s OK computer, the music on OK Human more inspired by the Beach Boys’ Animal sounds: During his Covid-19 quarantine this summer, the ever-prolific Cuomo went to work at his piano on a collection of new songs that he eventually brought to the studio, where he was joined by Weezer and a masked orchestra of 39 musicians.

Other musical touchstones for OK Human include Harry Nilsson’s Nilsson Schmilsson, The eponymous debuts of Randy Newman, the records of the carpenters and that of Françoise Hardy Personal message, the band said of their upcoming album. The album is now available for pre-order through their official online store.

A week before the premiere of “All My Favorite Songs,” Weezer surreptitiously created an “All My Favorite Songs” playlist on Spotify, featuring songs from Neil Young, Johnny Cash, REO Speedwagon, Toni Braxton, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Céline Dion and Sinéad O’Connor.
