“She Said,” a dramatic account of the sexual harassment investigation that toppled Harvey Weinstein and sparked the #MeToo movement, hits theaters next year.
The film, from Universal Pictures, will be released on November 18, 2022.
“She Said” will star Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan as New York Times reporters Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor, who together shattered the story that broke decades of silence on the subject of sexual assault in Hollywood and triggered a cultural calculation. The film will focus on their efforts to uncover and expose decades of allegations against the powerful film producer, who was ultimately sentenced to 23 years in prison for sexual assault and third degree rape.
Kantor and Twohey won the Pulitzer Prize for their work on the story, which was published in October 2017 and detailed accounts of many women who claimed Weinstein abused or harassed them in incidents dating back to the 1990s. Following Weinstein’s downfall, several prominent Hollywood figures such as Les Moonves, Kevin Spacey, Matt Lauer and Brett Ratner have been charged with sexual misconduct.
Maria Schrader, whose credits include the Netflix limited series “Unorthodox”, directs the film. Rebecca Lenkiewicz (“Ida”, “Colette”) adapts the screenplay, based on Twohey and Kantor’s bestselling book “She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite a Movement”. Production is expected to start this summer.
Producers of “She Said” include Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner for Plan B Entertainment. Annapurna founder Megan Ellison is executive producer on the film along with Sue Naegle.
