Report of the first day
Rory McIlroy shot a 66-under-five to qualify for a third career victory at Wells Fargo International in Charlotte.
McIlroy, who was competing in her first tournament since finishing tied for 21st at the Masters last month, shared the lead with American Joel Dahmen.
McIlroy, who won his first PGA Tour at Quail Hollow Stadium in 2010 before claiming the title five years later, shot five birdies to get into contention.
Scotsman Martin Laird also posted a solid performance. He shot 67 points to sit right behind McIlroy, in a group that also included former Masters champion Patrick Reed.
Justin Rose's attempt to recover from his disappointment with the Masters was not exactly what he expected, as he had four shots behind McIlroy after firing a 70-under-par.
Rose, who missed the cup at Augusta for the first time in his career, has recorded three bogeys in an inconsistent round, which should not put him in a position to compete with the leaders.
