The weekend edition of USA Today, released Friday, is unusual. The title of its banner on the front page reads: “We Fail Each Other”.
The newspaper describes “America’s fourth wave of Covid-19,” noting that it “didn’t need to happen” because vaccinations are so widely available. The headlines are followed by a call to action: “Let’s get it started now.”
A map on the front page, taken from data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, shows what the agency identifies as “high” community transmission in many counties from west to east.
Journalist Ken Alltucker writes of the high levels of hospitalizations “in areas where large swathes of unvaccinated people offer little resistance to the highly contagious delta variant.”
The message is clear: The United States is in the throes of another Covid crisis, due to vaccine resistance, and everyone is affected.
USA Today editor Gannett says he also devoted four inside pages of the weekend’s edition to the Covid wave, including fact-checks; reliable information on vaccines; and a column by USA Today editor-in-chief Nicole Carroll, who chronicles a conversation with her own brother who refuses to be vaccinated.
USA Today Editorial Board member Louie Villalobos has a front page column that begins:
“We’re not here to preach or condescend. We’re just going to tell you where things stand with Covid-19 and what we need to do if we have a chance to get back to some sort of ‘normal’ anytime soon.”
“Our children are returning to classrooms in herds,” Villalobos wrote. “Our workplaces will start to reopen. Airports are crowded again. Restaurants, cinemas, music festivals and tourist attractions are all making a comeback.”
So, Villalobos wrote, “If we don’t get strict about how this happens, 2020 could make a lethal comeback. It’s up to us. So let’s get started.”
