LOS ANGELES (KABC) – West Nile virus has continued to spread in southern California, officials said.

The Los Angeles County Vector Control District reported that signs of the virus had now been found in Carson, Northridge, Reseda and Signal Hill.

Residents are urged to use repellents registered with the EPA when they spend time outdoors to prevent mosquito bites.

The heat of summer can increase viral activity and mosquito populations, according to a district statement.

A 50-year-old Tustin woman has also been confirmed as the first human case of West Nile virus infection in Orange County this year.

According to the Orange County Health Agency, there have been 12 human cases of the disease in the county last year and one death.
