Leaked photos of what is supposed to be Xiaomi’s long-rumored foldable smartphone has apparently just surfaced on Chinese social media site Weibo (via MyFixGuide). The photographs show a person in a subway using a large folding device, which clearly runs Xiaomi’s custom MIUI 12 Android interface. This suggests that the device is either a foldable phone or a prototype foldable tablet from Xiaomi. The latter in particular could be due to the device’s prototype status, or less likely, Xiaomi implemented under-display selfie camera technology into its seemingly plastic screen. On the left side of the device, there is a visible slot that looks like a pen holder.
If it’s a foldable smartphone and not a tablet, it could be the biggest foldable phone we’ve ever seen, because at least in its current state, it appears to be even bigger than an iPad mini. The device also does not look like Xiaomi’s foldable smartphone patent of October. This latest patent showed a foldable phone closer to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Huawei Foldable Mate X.
On a related note, Xiaomi recently joined other Chinese companies such as Huawei to get blacklisted by the US administration, so whether this collapsible device is marketed or not, US citizens may find it difficult to get hold of it.
Either way, what do you think of a large foldable phone like this? Or do you think it’s not a phone and Xiaomi is about to release the world’s first foldable Android tablet? All we can do right now is speculate, but seeing that the Chinese giant actually has a working device now, not just a prototype render or sketch, strongly implies that we’ll finally have a foldable MIUI device this year.
