What Gregg Popovich said to Steve Kerr after Spurs loss

Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry may have just affected his Olympic bid after dismantling Gregg Popovich’s San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday.

Curry has previously expressed interest in playing for the 2020 Olympics, the very quadrennial that has since been postponed to 2021. Popovich is set to play on the sidelines of the U.S. team, with Steve Kerr as an assistant. However, after the Warriors’ stunning 114-91 win over Spurs, Coach Pop apparently changed his mind.

After the Dubs’ victory, Kerr said in his post-game squeeze that Pop jokingly told him that he no longer considered Steph for the U.S. team after embarrassing him.

“He told me after the game that he had considered Steph for the Olympic team, but he said after the way Steph had embarrassed him tonight he was no longer in consideration,” said Kerr laughing, by ESPN’s Nick Friedell.

Jokes aside, it’s not hard to understand Gregg Popovich’s statement. After all, Stephen Curry exploded for 32 points on an effective 11 of 20 shot against Spurs – finishing as the only player to score over 20 in the game. The Warriors superstar also recorded four rebounds and two assists to help Golden State lead up to 24 points at one point.

The Spurs’ latest performance is in stark contrast to their previous outing against the Warriors which saw them take the W, 105-100. While Curry also scored 32 in said confrontation, Pop and Co. were able to respond offensively behind DeMar DeRozan and Dejounte Murray.

For what it’s worth, Coach Pop may want to reconsider Steph for the U.S. team at the Olympics, as the All-Star shooter is clearly enjoying one of the best seasons of his career from an individual perspective, per Kerr.
