Reflecting on the creation of Zellweger's character, Anne Montgomery, Kelley explained to TV line"I have been thinking about this character for a long time, born of my unhealthy obsession with everything about Mrs. Robinson, who is so powerful and witty, but also tragic.

During the development process, Kelley had more movies in mind, adding: "Renee is a big fan – like me – of all these social thrillers of the late 80s / early 90s – Fatal Attraction and Primary instinct and of course Indecent Proposal.
"I really wanted to find that tone and have fun, while diverting the notion of morality and the place we currently occupy as a people."
